Safety Tips

Almost every deal on BuySalex goes smoothly. The few that go wrong usually follow the same patterns, and they are easy to avoid once you know them.

The three rules that stop most scams

  1. Never share an OTP, UPI PIN, card CVV or password. Not with a buyer, a seller, a "delivery agent" or someone claiming to be from BuySalex. We will never ask for them.
  2. You never need to enter your PIN to receive money. If someone sends you a QR code or a payment link "to receive" a payment, it is a scam. Receiving money needs nothing from you.
  3. Don't pay before you have seen the item. Advance payments for "booking", "courier charges", "token amount" or "army transfer" are the most common trick on classifieds sites.

Meeting in person

  • Choose a busy public place in daylight: a café, a mall, outside a bank or police station. Look for the safe meetup spots suggested in chat.
  • Tell a friend or family member where you are going, and take someone with you for expensive items.
  • For cars and bikes, check the RC, insurance and the owner's ID, and take a test drive with the seller present.
  • For phones and laptops, check that the device is unlocked from the previous owner's account, test the camera, battery, speakers and ports, and match the IMEI on the box with the one in the settings.
  • Count cash in front of the other person. For online payments, check that the money has actually arrived in your bank app, not just on a screenshot or SMS.

Warning signs

  • The price is far below what similar items sell for.
  • The other person refuses to meet, or says they are posted far away, in the army, or abroad.
  • They push you to move to WhatsApp or another app immediately, or to decide quickly.
  • They ask for your personal documents "for verification".
  • The buyer offers to pay more than your asking price, or wants to send a courier to collect.
  • Spelling of names, account holders and phone numbers keeps changing.

Use what BuySalex gives you

  • Chat on BuySalex, at least until you have met. Scam warnings appear in chat when we spot a known pattern, and the history helps us if something goes wrong.
  • Check the profile. Look at the member-since date, verification badges, ratings and the seller's other ads.
  • Buyer protection, where available, holds your payment until you confirm the item.
  • Report and block anyone suspicious from the ad or the chat menu.

If something goes wrong

  1. Stop all contact and do not send any more money.
  2. Report the user on BuySalex. We will act on the account and preserve the evidence.
  3. If you lost money, call your bank immediately to try to stop the transaction. In India, report cyber fraud on the national helpline 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in as soon as possible.
  4. File a police complaint if you were threatened or robbed.
